2 Odd Job Search Problems That Happen In January - Work It Daily
2 Odd Job Search Problems That Happen In January - Work It Daily Odd Problem #1: Getting back in the grind after the holidays is the worst, isnât it? Related: 5 Mindset Shifts Necessary For Career Success Boredom when you think about work. Dread as you wake up in the morning. Feeling like THIS year you need to do something different. Itâs probably time to get a new job, no? But hereâs the problem: Most people who make sweeping resolutions that âTHIS IS THE YEAR OF THE DREAM JOB, SERIOUSLY. YES. I MEAN ITâ never end up changing anything. Sadly, they stay stuck exactly where they are now. Odd Problem #1: Itâs not your resume. I know - your resume IS usually a problem, but in this case, thereâs more you need to worry about. When you think about getting a new job and get worried, whatâs your first thought? Itâs probably something like this: âWhat if I try and change jobs and canât pay the rent/mortgage/amazing lifestyle to which I am accustomed.â Then what happens after you think that? A flurry of positive activity? A lot of well-rounded research effort and networking push? Or a slow sink back down on your couch as you put off doing anything for another day? For most of us, itâs the couch. Itâs so safe and comfortable. And if we tell ourselves we canât make enough money anywhere else, then.... We get to stay stuck, and thereâs no reason to worry any more about that resume, right? Then thereâs this: Odd Problem #2: You see or hear about a great new job, and get excited. Time to fire up your network and start submitting your application, right? Except... Thereâs that dirty little thought that sneaks into your head that says: âThat job is SO GREAT. Wait - you donât have the skills to do that!â Or alternatively: âThat job is so GREAT. Crap, what if you fail at it? YOUâLL TOTALLY FAIL!!â And your breathing picks up and you think: âMaybe Iâll wait and work on that application later.â Or âThat great job wasnât REALLY right for me anyway.â And you stop. *sigh* And all of a sudden itâs April and you are still at that job you swore youâd leave by now. Hereâs Some Help See, for many of us the main problem with job searching isnât the job searching itself (though, Iâm not going to pretend that finding a job is easy); the problem is our mindset AROUND the kind of jobs or careers we can do. Most of us get motivated for a second, but then we start to focus on all that we canât do, or all that weâd lose, and we let ourselves be foiled before we even begin. But not you - because youâve made it this far in the article, so congratulations! Hereâs What I Want You To Do Next: Make a list of all the great things you can gain by changing jobs, and post that list somewhere prominent. Maybe itâs a better commute or more interesting work. Maybe itâs a nicer work environment with more flexible hours. Maybe itâs recognition and respect that you are missing now. It doesnât matter, I just want you to write everything down so that when your fears begin to surface, youâve got an immediate way to focus and keep going. Donât let your mindset hold you back. Why? Because you DO deserve that great new job - and itâs time to go and get it! If you need more help with your fears, join our free 7-day new year, new career challenge right over here. 20 Things You Didnt Realize Were Practice for Working Motherhood
20 Things You Didnt Realize Were Practice for Working Motherhood While nothing can fully prepare you for the chaos and exhaustion that is working motherhood, many seemingly unrelated experiences from your past can actually ease the transition to this oh-so-special phase of existence. Those mean girls from the high-school cafeteria? They were just younger versions of the PTA moms youll encounter. College all-nighters? How else would you know before your baby arrives that youre capable of getting work done on no sleep? For the days (and evenings) youre feeling ill-prepared to handle all that your professional and family lives are hurling at you, refer to this list for a reminder that youve been there, done that.1. Building a crib.If youre one of those couples who flawlessly hands over the screwdriver before the other even asks for it, congrats, parenthood will be a cinch. If you arent, well remember what building the crib was like? Think that, but every day.2. Shopping at Ikea. How str ong is your relationship? How do you handle crowds? Indecision? Mistakes? These are important issues to navigate before going to Ikea, and coincidentally, before having children.3. Colleagues who throw tantrums. All those demanding managers (I need it now), oversharing coworkers (You wont believe what just happened in the bathroom ) and passive-aggressive emailers (As I stated before ... ) were actually just practice for having a threenager.4. Wedding planning.Birthday parties are a breeze once youve found appropriately positioned seats for divorced relatives and hired entertainment that can play your mother-in-laws obscure choice for her dance with her son.5. Buying a home. The process is needlessly complicated, much like filling out post-delivery hospital paperwork and registering for daycare.6. Open enrollment for health insurance at work. The choices get mora complex and expensive once a child enters the picture, so at least youll have experience thinking of all the possible reason s you might wind up in the hospital over the next calendar year.7. Commuting. You become adept a calculating exactly how much time you need to arrive, from locking your door to sitting down at your desk, which is crucial so you can grimace at the exact second a tantruming toddler makes you late before work.8. Being glued to your cellphone.Such extreme attachment comes in handy when daycare can (and will) call at any time.9. Dropping something outside and having to chase after it as the wind has its way with it.Just what its like to run after little kids who do not want to get in the car in the morning. Coincidentally, its also what going after promotions can feel like.10. Sitting through commercials in the pre-Netflix days. That kind of patience serves working moms well when their preschoolers tell them really important stories that make no sense and seem to have no end, and also when work superiors do the same.11. Chugging drinks. Its precisely the rate at which you need to consume be verages, and food for that matter, whenever youre home with your needy little beings. It also makes you appreciate the leisurely pace at which you can sip your coffee at work.12. Pulling all-nighters.Speaking of good decisions you made in college, yeah, the ability to function on no sleep is a skill on which working moms rely.13. Taking five classes at a time while holding down a work-study gig, playing intramural volleyball, working on a thesis, touring with your a cappella group, untersttzung a high schooler and applying for post-college jobs.Working parenthood is as much of a juggle/struggle every day, but instead of you having fun, its your kids.14. Troubleshooting your electronic devices problems.Kids wont wait for the Apple Genius Bar to get back to them when their tablet wont turn on.15. Getting paper cuts at work.Kids accidentally, and not so accidentally, injure you in surprisingly painful, but not life-threatening, ways every damn day of their lives.16. Blizzards or hurric anes that force you to stay inside for several days in a row.Thats maternity leave in a nutshell.17. Making plans with friends and never following through. Its the equivalent of politely telling another busy working parent Lets do lunch because you know that aint ever gonna happen.18. High-school drama.Oh, you thought you left it all behind, did you? Turns out high-school cliques have nothing on PTA-mom cliques. Thank goodness you learned just to roll your eyes at it all back then.19. Getting mono your freshman year of college.Youre an old pro at fighting through overwhelming exhaustion.20. Getting negative feedback at work.Youre going to hear Jane cant keep her hands to herself and Jackson needs more practice with algebra throughout your childrens school career. Good thing you know how to fake-smile when processing criticism and not take it too personally.--This story originally appeared in Working Mother.
